measurements,andhadalsodesignedadetector,alaser-basedinterferometer;whichwouldovercomethisnoise.Early

on,bothKipThorneandRainerWeisswerefirmlyconvincedthatgravitationalwavescouldbedetectedandbring

aboutarevolutioninourknowledgeoftheuniverse.

Gravitationalwavesspreadatthespeedoflight,fillingtheuniverse,asAlbertEinsteindescribedinhisgeneral

theoryofrelativity.Theyarealwayscreatedwhenamassaccelerates,likewhenaice-skaterpirouettesorapairofblack

holesrevolvearoundeachother,Einsteinwasconvinceditwouldneverbepossibletomeasurethem.TheLIGO

project'sachievementwasusingapairofgiganticlaserinterferometerstomeasureachangethousandsoftimessmaller
