fromrevertingbacktotheirdarkertendencies.

Civilization,however,mustbelearned.Londonitself,inthebookasymbolof

enlightenment,wasonce"oneofthedarkerplacesoftheearth"beforethe

RomansforcedcivilizationupontheBritons.Butcivilizedsocietydoesnotgetrid

ofprimevalsavagetendencieswhichlurkinthebackground.

ThissavageryisseeninKurtz.MarlowmeetsKurtzandhefindsamanthathas

totallythrownofftherestraintofcivilizationandhasde-evolvedintoaprimitivestate.

MarlowknowsaboutKurtz,hehaslearnedfromothers.Theyhavegoodreasonfornot

beingtruthfultoMarlow.ThereforeMarlowhastopiecetogethermuchofKurtz'sstory.
