badthing.Free-marketeconomiescouldnotfunctionifwewereallMotherTeresa.But
(hereisnothinginherentinthehumanconditionthatkeepsgreedinmoderation.Sothere
arelaws,andthereareappearances.Boththeseforcesdrawaroughline—andattemptto

precision.Keynesusedtheterm"animalspirits"todescribethemotivationofbusiness
people.Asuccessfuleconomyneedsaculturethatencouragesthem,uptoapoint.It'sa
Goldilocks-typcsituation.Youdon'twanttoomuchgreed,andyoudon*twanttoolittle—
youwantanamountthat'sjustright.Butthedialsarenotallthatsensitive.Aculturethat
encouragesenoughgreedinenoughpeoplewillencouragelooniuuhinalew.Ifnobody
istakinggreedtoofar,youcanbecertainthattoofewpeoplearetakingitfarenough.For
somereason,noneof(helawyerswhoaredefending(hebiggreedheadshavechosen(o
makethisargument.Instead,theyofferinconsistenttheoriestoexplaintheobvious.
LawyersfortheRigasfamily,whichperformedtheremarkablefeatofbankruptinga
cablecompany,saytheirclientscan'tbeguiltyofaconspiracytolootthecompany
becausetheyaretoodimwitted:oneis"notthesawiestguy,*'anotheris"clueless."
