InthepoemthespeakerwandersthroughthestreetsofLondonandcommentsonhisobservations.Heseesdespairinthefacesofthepeoplehemeetsandhearsfearandrepressionintheirvoices.Thewoefulcryofthechimney-sweeperstandsasachastisementtotheChurch,andthebloodofasoldierstainstheouterwallsofthemonarch'sresidence.Thenighttimeholdsnothingmorepromising:thecursingofprostitutescorruptsthenewborninfantandsulliesthe"Marriagehearse."
