Blake announced the important position of the imagination over the rationalism(理性主義)and materialism of the 18th century. Blake was born in London and his father was a successful London businessman who encouraged Blakes artistic talents. Blake was first educated at home, chiefly by his mother. At 14, Blake followed his fathers wish and was apprenticed (當學徒) for seven years to the engraver James Basire. Gothic art and architecture influenced him deeply. Blakes first book of poems, , appeared in 1783 and was followed by and . His most famous poem was part of his . In these works the world was seen from a childs point of view, but they also functioned as parables of adult experience. In the , Blake expressed his lifelong concern with the struggle of the soul to free its natural energies from organized religion. Blake engraved and published most of his major works himself. Blake never escaped his economic poverty, which was largely due to his inability to compete in the highly competitive field of engraving. He also spent a lot on his invention a device enabling a person to design illustrations and print words at the same time. However, he remained independent throughout his life and didnt leave any economic burden to his family after his death. On August 12, 1827, he was buried in an unmarked grave in a public cemetery. Generally regarded as strange, misunderstanding shadowed his career as a writer and artist during his lifetime. However, later generations rediscovered Blake and today he is highly rated as a poet and artist.56. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind clothes as he went. He flew into the water, not realizing that an alligator (鈍吻鱷) was swimming towards him. His mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw what was happening. In great fear, she ran towards the water, while shouting to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. However, it was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the bank of the swimming pool, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. Then began an incredible tug-of-war (拔河) between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. Luckily, a farmer happened to drive by, and on hearing their screams, he took aim and shot the alligator. After several weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were badly scarred by the attack of the animal. On his arms were deep scratches where his mothers fingernails had dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to her beloved son. The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, “But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mom wouldnt let go.” Never judge another persons scars, because you dont know how they were made. 60. Theyre not there to slow drivers down and lower the road accidents. They just make money for the government. They trick us, cost us cold hard cash, distract us from driving properly and are plain unfair. Well, heres a surprising thing: What if there are facts that the boring cameras actually saved lives? Its a conclusion difficult to ignore when you look at whats happening in France, a country with a historically poor record of road safety. There were 16,617 road deaths in 1972 in France, for example, but that had dropped to 8412 by 1995 following the introduction of rules such as compulsory seat belt wearing in 1990 and a lowering of the blood alcohol limit to 0.05 in 1995. In 2005, the road deaths dropped below 5,000 for the first time, or 4.9 per cent less than 2004. Thats about 817 deaths per million people compared with Australias 806. And guess what? In 2005, the number of speed cameras on French roads reached 1,000 and the government plans to double that within the next three years. Okay, you know the arguments regarding increased traffic safety and cameras-for-income, but it seems in France theres been a major cultural change brought on by radars and other laws. A three-hour, wine-soaked lunch with a quick rush back to the office is no longer on. Travelling on the highways, it is rare to see anyone breaking the 130 km/h speed limit when once few traveled below it. The speed cameras are clearly signed so drivers know when they are coming. Theres even an official website listing fixed and mobile camera locations and it is updated regularly. Maybe it is because of such transparency(透明)by the government, rather than the concealment too often used by authorities in many other countries that more French people can enjoy joy of living thanks to speed cameras.68. The underlined word “concealment” in the last paragraph means “ _”.A. hiding B. openness C. strictness D. harmony Gordon Brown is Britains Prime Minister. On Wednesday Tony Blair left office with a legacy of economic prosperity overshadowed by the deeply divisive Iraq war. Queen Elizabeth II asked Gordon Brown to form a new government. Speaking shortly after the queen confirmed Gordon Brown as Britains new prime minister, the ex-Treasury chief addressed reporters outside his new home and office at No.10 Downing Street. Brown said, “On this day I remember words that have stayed with me since my childhood and which matter a great deal to me today, my school motto: I will try my utmost. This is my promise to all of the people of Britain and now let the work of change begin. Thank you.” After ten years as chancellor of the exchequer (財政部), Browns devotion to fiscal “prudence (精心的管理)” and his commitment to increasing aid to Africa are well known, but questions remain about what he intends to do in Iraq and more generally about his foreign policy goals. Early on Wednesday morning, Blair, who had won three successive
