NOAAofficialsarecallingthenewsatelliteGOES-R.ThatisshortforamuchlongernametheGeostationary

OperationalEnvironmentalSatellite-RSeries.

NOAAsaidGOES-Rcouldimprovethenation'sabilitytoobserveweatherconditionsandmakeweather

predictions.Itsaidthesatellite'sdevicewouldleadtomoreexactandtimelyweatherforecasts,watchesandwarnings.

Thegovernmentagencysaidthesatellitewillrequiretestingofitssixinstrumentsandwillbereadytowork

“withinayear."Oneofthesixinstrumentsonthesatelliteisdesignedtohelpscientistsstudylightningstrikesandmap

them.This,NOAAsays,willhelptheagencyfollowthemovementofseverestormsandprovidemoredetailedwarnings.

“Thenextgenerationofweathersatellitesisfinallyhere,“saidNOAAAdministratorKathrynSullivan.She

describedGOES-RasoneofthemosteffectiveEarth-observingmachinesevercreated.Sullivansaiditsinstrumentswill

beabletostudyEarthfivetimesfasterandwithfourtimesmoredetailsthananyotherNOAAsatellitecurrentlyin

operation.AnNOAAstatementsaidthegreaterdetailwillhelpimprovetheagency'sstudyofoceanstorms,aswellas

“thepredictionandwarningsofseverewcather.^^Inaddition,GOES-Rwillbeabletoprovideimprovedrainfall

estimates,whichwillleadtomoretimelyanddetailedfloodwarnings.
