He was determined to try his

4、 best atevery practice, and perhaps he d get to play when he became asenior. All through high school he n ever missed a practice or a game, butremaineda bench warmer all four years. His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encourageme nt for him.When the young man went to c

5、ollege, he decided to try out for the football team as a walk- on.Everyone was sure he could n ever make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted that he kept him onthe roster because he always put his heart andsoulinto every practice, and at the same time, provided the other memberswith the spirit.T

6、he n ews that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the n earest pho neand called his father. His father shared his exciteme nt and was sent seas on ticketsfor all thecollege games. This persiste ntyoung athlete n evermissed practice during his four years at college, but he

7、never got to play in a game.It was the end of the senior footballseas on, and as he trotted on to the practicefield shortly before the big playoff game, the coach met him with a telegram and he became deathly silent.Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “ My father died this mornin g. Is it all

8、right if I misspractice today?”The coach put his arm gen tly around his shoulder and said,“ Take the rest ofthe week off, son. And don t even plan to come to the game on Saturday.”Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, whenthe team was ten points beh ind, a sile nt

9、young man quietlyslipped into the emptylocker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sideli nes, the coach and his players wereastounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon.“Coach, please let me play. I ve just got to play today, ” said the young man.The coach prete nded not t

10、o hear him. There was no way he wan ted his worst player in this closeplayoff game. But the young man persisted , and fin ally feeli ng sorry for the kid, the coach gave in .Before long, the coach, the players, and every one in the sta nds could not believe their eyes. Thislittle unknown, who had n

11、ever played before was doing everythi ngrig ht. The score was soon tied. Fin ally, the young man s team won the game!The coach asked how he did it. He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes,and said, “Well, you know my father died, but did you know that myfather was blind? ” the youngman swallo
