studypublishedinCNSSpectnimsclaimedtobethefirstlarge-scalelookatexcessiveInternetuse.TheAmerican

PsychiatricAssociationmayconsiderlistingInternetaddictioninthenexteditionofitsdiagnosticmanual.Andscores

ofonlinediscussionboardshavepoppeduponwhichpeoplediscussnegativeexperiencestiedtotoomuchtimeonthe

Web.

"There'snoquestionthatthereYepeoplewho'reseriouslyintroublebecausethey'reoverdoingtheirInternet

involvement/*saidpsychiatrist(精神科醫生)IvanGoldberg.Goldbergcallstheproblemadisorderratherthanatrue

addiction.

JonathanBishop,aresearcherinWalesspecializinginonlinecommunities,ismoreskeptical,"TheInternetisan

environment,*'hesaid."Youcan'tbeaddictedtotheenvironment."Bishopdescribestheproblemassimplyamatterof

priorities,whichcanbesolvedbyencouragingpeopletoprioritizeotherlifegoalsandplansinplaceoftimespent

ThenewCNSSpectrumsstudywasbasedonresultsofanationwidetelephonesurveyofmorethan2,500adults.

Likethe2005survey,thisonewasconductedbyStanfordUniversityresearchers.About6%ofrespondentsreported

that"theirrelationshipssufferedbecauseofexcessiveInternetuse."About9%attemptedtoconceal"nonessential

Internetuse,"andnearly4%reportedfeeling"preoccupiedbytheInternetwhenoffline."

About8%saidtheyusedtheInternetasawaytoescapeproblems,andalmost14%reportedthey"foundithardto

stayawayfromtheInternetforseveraldaysatatime."

"TheInternetproblemisstillinitsinfancy,1'saidEliasAboujaoude,aStanfordprofessor.Nosingleonlineactivity

istoblamefbrexcessiveuse,hesaid."They'reonlineinchatrooms,checkinge-mail,orwritingblogs.[Theproblemis]

notlimitedtoporn(色情)orgambling*'websites.

ExcessiveInternetuseshouldbedefinednotbythenumberofhoursspentonlinebut“intermsoflosses,°said

MaressaOrzack,aHarvardUniversityprofessor."Ifit'saloss[where]you'renotgettingtowork,andfamily

relationshipsarebreakingdownasaresult,thenit'stoomuch."

Sincetheearly1990s,severalclinicshavebeenestablishedintheU.S.totreatheavyInternetusers.Theyinclude

theCenterforInternetAddictionRecoveryandtheCenterfbrInternetBehavior.

ThewebsiteforOrzack*scenterliststhefollowingamongthepsychologicalsymptomsofcomputeraddiction:

WhenshediscussesInternethabitswithherpatients,theyoftenreportthatbeingonlineoffersa"senseofbelonging,

andescape,excitement[and]fun,"shesaid.nSomepeoplesayrelief...becausetheyfindthemselvessorelaxed."

SomepartsoftheInternetseemtodrawpeopleinmorethanothers.Internetgamersspendcountlesshours

competingingamesagainstpeoplefromallovertheworld.Onesuchgame,calledWorldofWarcraft,iscitedonmany

sitesbyposterscomplainingofa"gamingaddiction.0

AndrewHeidrich,aneducationnetworkadministratorfromSacramento,playsWorldofWarcraftforabouttwoto

fourhourseveryothernight,butthat'snothingcomparedwiththe40to60hoursaweekhespentplayingonlinegames

whenhewasincollege.Hecutbackonlyafterafull-scalefamilyintervention(干預),inwhichrelativestoldhimhe'd

gainedweight.
