bedroom.Georgeremembersthatwhenhewaslookingatthebarrel,

hehappenedtoaskRussell,“WheresStaci?,zRusselltoldhimthat

shewasoutshopping.

Oddly,thebarrelwaswarmtothetouch."Whatsinhere?”George

asked.Russellsaiditwasjustsomeoldragsandengineparts.He

wantedtogetridofthembecausehehadheardthatspontaneous

combustioncouldoccur.Georgesaidthathethoughtitmightbe

occurringatthatverymoment.

Thebarrelwasveryheavy.HeaskedRussellifthewholeengine

wasinsidethebarrel.Russelljustgrunted.Oncetheygotitoutside,

theyrolledittothebackofRussellspickuptruck.Georgehelped

Russellpositionametalmotorcyclerampbehindthetruck,andthey

pushedthebarrelslowlyupintothebedofthepickup.Whenthey

finished,GeorgetoldRussellthatthiswasa"twocase"move,

meaningtwocasesofBudweiser.Russelltoldhimnoproblem.

Russellclosedthetailgateofthepickupandtheydrovetothe

dock.Itwasacoldday,anditwasraining.Theytransferredthe

barrelintothebackofRussells25-footfishingboat.Theboatwas

named"Staci,〃altaoughithadfirstbeennamed〃Kathy,〃andthen

“Beverly,“afterRussellsfirsttwowives.Russellsteeredtheboat

intothegulf.Anhourlater,aftersomeslippingandgruntingand

1ifting,theymanagedtodumpthebarreloverboard.Georgetold

Russellthatithadbecomea“threecase"job.Russellchuckledand

saidnoproblem.

Russellstoppedatasupermarketonthewayhome,andtheyput

threecasesofcoldBudintothebedofthepickup.Russellopened

acaseandpulledouttwocans,andtheydrankthemonthewayback

tothehouseinthewarmthofthecab.

Georgecal1edStaciafewdayslater,becausehewantedtoborrow

somemoneyfromher.RussellsaidthatStaciwasgone.

“Whatdoyoumean,gone”?Georgeasked.RussellsaidthatStaci

hadlefthimforanotherman,andshehadmovedoutofthecity.

Georgethoughtthatwasveryodd;butbecauseRussellwasapoliceman,

Georgebelievedhim.HeaskedRussellifhecouldborrow$300so

thathecouldspendtheweekendinLasVegas.Russellsaidno

problem.

Beforeleaving,GeorgecalledhismomtotellheraboutStaci.

WhenhereturnedfromVegas,Georgesawhissistersfaceonthelocal

TVnews.Underherpicturewastheword"Missing.〃TheTVreporter

saidthatKathy,Russellsfirstwife,hadbeenaccidentallyshot

todeathwhileturkeyhuntingwithRussellsixyearsago.Beverly,

Russellssecondwife,hadaccidentallydrownedinherbathtubthree

yearsago.George,nowsuspicious,putdownhisbeer.Hecalledthe

police.Theofficeraskedifshecouldputhimonholdforasecond.

Georgesaidnoproblem.

counties.Almosthalfofthemweretheresultofarsonorhuman

planyearsago.Thewholecommunityof98homeownersmanagedtoget

intotheircarswiththeirfamiliesandpetsandjustafewoftheir

materialpossessions.Theyallsurvivedtheragingfire.

Unfortunately,48homesweredestroyedand27weredamaged.The

fireengineswerejustnotcloseenoughtothecommunitytogetthere

beforetheSantaAnawinds,gustingupto60mph,rippedthrough

thecanyon.Thenextday,firefightersdeclaredthatthefirewas

firewasdeliberateoraccidental.
