in1497,followedbythreevoyagesstartingfrom1576ledbyCabot'sfellowcountryman,Martin

resultinginfurtherexploration.However,theyinitiallyhadnosuccesspushingbeyondthebaysand

changingchannelsofEasternCanada.

AtthesametimeasEnglishexplorationwastakingplaceintheeast,onthewesterncoastnish

seamenwereattemptingtofindaroutefromwesttoeast.In1539,60yearsbeforeFrobisher9sepic

journeys,aniard,FranciscodeUlloa,exploredCaliforniaandhisexploitscreatedthemythofa

passageacrossthecontinentfromCalifornia.Furtherexplorationfromincontinuedforthenexttwo

centuries.Duringthistime,Russiabecameinvolvedinexplorationfurthernorth,withVitusBering,

aDaneworkingforRussia,locatingandnamingtheBeringStrait,thewaterwaybetweenRussiaand

Alaska.

ThemostfamousoftheWesternnavigatorswasEnglishmanCaptainJamesCook,who,in

1778,attemptedtofindthepassageforaprizeof£20,000offeredbytheBritishAdmiralty.Neither

henorothernavigatorswhofollowedhim,includingcompatriotGeorgeVancouver,discoveredany

signofariverthatwouldleadeastwards,rather,theywereblockedbyglaciersclosetothecoast.

TheyconcludedthattherewasnopassagesouthoftheBeringStrait.

Perhapsthemostimpressivejourneywastheonethatfinallyachievedsuccess.Inthesearchfbr

Franklin,CommanderRobertMcClure'sexpeditionengagedinaremarkablejourneybetween1850

and1854.HisshipHMSInvestigatorsailedfirstaroundCapeHomandthen,afterheadingnorth,

foundaroutefromwesttoeastthroughtheBeringStraitandacrossNorthernCanada.Duringthis

timehisshipwastrappediniceforthreewintersandhiscrew,despitenearlydyingofstarvation,

completedthejourneyacrosstheiceinsleds,beforebeingpickedupbyanothership.However,the

NorthwestPassagewasnottraversedentirelybyseauntil1906whenRoaldAmundsen,thegreat

polarexplorer(whowasalsothefirsttoreachtheSouthPole),finallyachievedthisfeatbytaking
