brain’semotioncentresmorethanitsrecordedcounterpart.
Concertsareimmersive(沉浸式的)socialexperiencesinwhichpeoplelistentoandfeelthemusictogether
throughcrescendos,keychangesandrhythmicdrops.Moreover,theyaredynamic—artistscanadapttheirplaying
accordingtothecrowd’sreaction.
Itwasthislastdifferencethatledneuroscientists,basedattheUniversitiesofZurichandOslo,tostudythe
brainresponsesofpeoplelisteningtomusic.Inthe“live”experiment,participantslayinanMRIscannerlistening
tothemusicthroughearphones,whileapianistwaspositionedoutsidetheroom.Thepianistwasshownthe
participant’sreal-timebrainactivityasaformoffeedback.Intherecordedcondition,participantslistenedto
pre-recordedversionsofthesametunes.
Thescientistswereinterestedinhowlivemusicaffectedtheareasofthebrainresponsibleforprocessing
emotions,particularlytheamygdala,anareadeepinsidethebrain.Theresults,justpublishedinthejournalPNAS,
revealedthatlivemusichadasignificantlygreateremotionalimpact.Whetherthemusicconveyedhappinessor
sadness,dynamicliveperformancesledtoincreasedactivitynotonlyintheamygdalabutalsootherpartsofthe

“Otherresearchhasshownthatifplasticsaresmallenough,theycancrossthegut(腸道)wallandgetinto
internalorgansthoughthelong-termeffectsarestillunclear.Plasticscanalsoreleasechemicalsthatareharmfulto
digestivesystem,”saysKahane-Rapport.“Thisisconcerning,andwhilewedonotyetunderstandthelong-term

Meanwhile,theimpactonwhales—andwhatitindicates—istroublingonmanyfronts.“Whalesareecosystem
engineers,”saysKahane-Rapport.“Theycanspreadthenutrientsthattheyconsumedandserveasecosystem
guards—whenwhalesarenothealthy,otherpartsofthesystemwillsuffer.”
