excellenceinhumanitiesandsocialscientificscholarshipand
education.
Inresponse,theAmericanAcademyformedtheCommissionon
theHumanitiesandSocialSciences,withDukeUniversity
PresidentRichardBrodheadandretiredExelonCEOJohnRoweas
co-chairmen.Amongthecommissions51membersare
top-tier-universitypresidents,scholars,lawyers,judges,
andbusinessexecutives,aswellasprominentfiguresfrom
diplomacy,filmmaking,musicandjournalism.
Thegoalsidentifiedinthereportaregenerallyadmirable.
Becauserepresentativegovernmentpresupposesaninformed

illiberalnatureofliberaleducationatourleadingcolleges

thecontentandcharacterofliberaleducationandarethus
deprivedofitsbenefits.Sadly,thespiritofinquiryonceat
homeoncampushasbeenreplacedbytheuseofthehumanities
andsocialsciencesasvehiclesfordisseminatingprogressive,

Today,professorsroutinelytreattheprogressive
interpretationofhistoryandprogressivepublicpolicyasthe
propersubjectofstudywhileportrayingconservativeor
classicalliberalideas—suchasfreemarkets,self-reliance
andadistrustofcentralplanning—asfallingoutsidethe
boundariesofroutine,andsometimeslegitimate,intellectual
investigation.
