Ontheotherside,inabrightbluehouse,livedamusicteachercalledPoppyPlink.Eachmorning,Poppysatdownandplayedgrandtunesonhergrandpiano.Afterbreakfast,herstudentsstartedtoarrive.

Violinsscreeched,drumsthunderedandbassoonsbellowed.MrFlinchshuthiswindow,butthenoisestillcamethroughthewall.Brum–brum,tootle–toot,bang!Hiswholehouseshookandshivered.

Heputhisfingersinhisears.

Herappedonthewall…buthisneighboursdidnothear.

Theywerefartoohappy.Theyweremendingcarsandmakingmusic,andtheylovedtheirwork.

MrFlinchraprappeduntilhemadeholesinhiswallpaper.Itdidnogood.

MrFlinchlockedhimselfinacupboard.Hewoundoldtowelsroundhishead.

Hewroteangryletters,buttorethemallup.‘Stscostfartoomuchmoney!’hesaid.

Eveninbed,heworeahattokeepoutthenoise.

Butthecarsstillrevvedandthemusicstilljangled.

MrFlinchwasthegreyfillinginanoisesandwich.

‘Thiscan’tgoon,’Flinchthoughttohimself.Heevenshouteditoutloud:‘Thiscan’tgoon!’1Flinch先生一個黯淡的灰色鎮(zhèn)里有一棟黯淡的灰色的房子里住著一個不高興的男人。并不是他的灰色房子讓Flinch先生不高興。這并不是說他是可憐的,因為他不是。Flinch先生是一個守財奴。他從來不花一分錢。（也從來不個別人一個微笑。）他是一個低劣的和悲慘的男人。Flinch先生很悲催是因為他的鄰居們。Flinch先生的黯淡的灰色房子一邊有一棟歡樂的紅色房子。它屬于修理汽車的CarlClutch。Carl很喜歡車—還有摩托車、大蓬貨車和卡車。每個早上，F(xiàn)linch先生被錘子敲,扳手發(fā)出叮當聲的和發(fā)動機轉(zhuǎn)的聲音吵醒。整個街道都被聲音震動。在另一邊，一棟愉快的、藍色的房子里住著一個叫PoppyPlink的音樂老師。每天早上，Poppy坐下來在她的大鋼琴上彈奏宏偉的樂章。在早飯后，她的學生們逐漸到達。小提琴發(fā)出尖銳的聲音，鼓和低音管大聲發(fā)出吼叫聲。Flinch先生關上了他的窗戶，但噪聲依舊穿過了墻。“梆梆，突突，梆”！他的整個房子都在震動和顫抖。他用手指堵住了他的耳朵。他敲擊著墻…但他的鄰居們并沒有聽見。他們太開心了他們愉快的修著汽車和玩著音樂，他們愛他們的工作。“梆梆，突突，梆”！他不停的敲著墻，直到在他的墻紙上弄出了一個洞。這并不好。Flinch先生把自己鎖在了櫥柜里面，并用舊毛巾包裹住了自己的頭。他寫了很多表達他生氣的信，但又撕碎了所有的信。“郵寄會花很多的錢。”他說。在床上，他甚至也戴著一頂帽子用于趕走噪音。但是汽車仍然在運轉(zhuǎn)，音樂仍然在發(fā)出刺耳的聲音。Flinch先生是一個被夾在“噪音三明治”里的灰色填充物。“他們不可以再這樣了！”Flinch想。他甚至大喊道：“他們不可以再這樣了！”2

Atmidnight,MrFlinchclimbedontohisroofand–carefully,carefully–crawledacrossthetiles.HeputhisheaddownPoppy’schimneyandgavealong,loud,‘Hooowooowoooo!’

‘Thatwillgetrideofher,’hesaidwithagrimgrin.‘Nobodywantstoliveinahousewithghosts!’

Thenheclimbedbackintobed.

Nextmorning,MrFlinchwoketoaHUGEnoise.Carsandlorrieswerestoppingoutside.Helookedoutofhiswindow.

Carlwassittingoutsideintherood,withatable,akettle,aloafofbreadandabottleoftomatosauce.

CarlcalledtoMrFlinch,‘Can’tusemykitchentoday!Rays,urgh!Mymumiscleaningup.Shetoldmetoeatmybreakfastoutside.That’showIgotthisgreatidea!Take–awaybreakfast!Driverscanstophereandbuybreakfast.’

Justthen,PoppyPlinkcamerunningoutofherbluefrontdoor.‘Oh,MrFlinch!Oh,Carl!Guesswhathappenedlastnight!’

‘Igiveup,’saidMrFlinch,withasumgsmirk.‘Dotell.’

Poppybeamedwithjoy.‘Lastnight,anglessangdownmychimney!Theydid,Ipromise!’Shefrowned.‘Butthemusicwasn’tverygood!Ithinktheywantsomenewsongstosing!I’msuretheywantmetowritethem,andIshall!OhIshall!’

Poppystillhadtoteachmusicallday.

Butatnightshewroteanglemusic.Shemadeitniceandloud,withlotsofcymbalsandtrumpets.

ItwasalltoomuchforMrFlinch.

Hefeltinhisemptypocketsandgulped.‘Allthatmoneygone!Ah,butsoonthosenoisyneighbourswillbegone,too!’

Inafewdays,MrFlinch’sneighbourshadsolduptheirhouses.

Seeinghim,Poppywavedupatthewindow.

‘Suchluck,MrFlinch!’shecalled.‘Fancy!Afewdaysago,Imetsomeonewhowantstomovehousetoo!Weagreedtoswaphouses!’

Justthen,Carlcameoutofhisfrontdoorcarryingtwoheavytoolboxes.HesawPoppystrugglingwithaharpandwenttohelpher.‘Allset,Poppy?hesaid.

‘Allset,Carl!Isn’tthisfun!’Shereplied.
