HiltonfoundthatAmericanEnglishspeakershavedifferentconversational

styles.Sheidentifiedtwodistinctgroups:highandlowintensityspeakers.Highinten-

sityspeakersaregenerallyuncomfortablewithmomentsofsilenceinconversation

andconsidertalkingatthesametimeasignofengagement.Lowintensityspeakers

finditrudetotalkatthesametimeandpreferpeoplespeakoneafteranotherincon-

versation.

Thedifferencesinconversationalstylesbecameevidentwhenparticipantslis-

tenedtoaudioclipsinwhichtwopeoplespokeatthesametimebutwereagreeing

witheachotherandstayedontopic,Hiltonsaid.Thehighintensitygroupreported

thatconversationswherepeoplespokeatthesametimewhenexpressingagreement

werenotinterruptivebutengagedandfriendlierthantheconversationswithmoments

ofsilenceinbetweenspeakingturns.Incontrast,thelowintensitygroupperceived

anyamountofsimultaneous(同時)chatasarudeinterruption,regardlessofwhat

thespeakersweresaying.
