TherockonwhichtheWestAntarcticicerestsisbelowsealevel,andBritishAntarcticSurveyresearchersbelievethethinningcouldbeduetotheicesheetmeltingonitsunderside.

"Itmaybethattheoceaniswarmingandthat'scausingtheicetomelt,buttheremaybeothermasonsaswell;forexample,there'slotsofvolcanisminthatareaandsothatcouldchangehowmuchheatisdeliveredtotheundersideoftheicesheet."
