9、 has just bought ano ther garage in Pin hurst. Pin hurst is only five miles from Silbury, but Mr Scott cannot get a teleph one for his new garage, so he has just bought twelve pigeons. Yesterday, a pigeon carried the first messagefrom Pinhurst to Silbury. The bird covered the distanee in three minut

10、es. Up to now, Mr Scott has sent a great many requests for spare parts and other urge nt messagesfrom one garage to the other. In this way, he has beg un his own private teleph one service.Lesson 6 Percy Buttons珀西巴頓斯I have just moved to a house in Bridge Street. Y esterday abeggar knocked at mydoor.

They were expecting a valuable parcel of diam ond from South Africa. A few hours earlier, some on

Whenthe plane arrived, someof the detectives were waiting in side the main build ing while others were wait ing on the airfield.Two men took the parcel off the pla ne and carriedit in to the Customs House. While two detectives wer

15、, but Joe wins every time. Bill Frith'sgarden is largerthan Joe's. Bill works harder than Joe and grows more flowers and vegetables, but Joe's garden is more interesting. Hehas made n eat paths and has built a woode n bridge over a pool.I like garde ns too, but I do not like hard work. E

It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It wou

17、ld strike twelve in twenty minu tes' time. Fiftee n minu tes passed and the n, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. Wewaited and waited, but nothing happe ned. Sudde nly some one shouted, 'It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!' I look

18、ed at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that mome nt everybody bega n to laugh and sing.Less on 10 Not for jazz不適于演奏爵士 樂We have an old musical instrument. 21、m his friends and never pays it back. Harry saw me and came and sat at the same table. He has n ever borrowed money from me. While he was eating, I asked him to lend me&2. To mysurprise, he gave methe mon eyimmediately.'I have never borrowed any money from you,' Harry said, 'so now y

22、ou can pay for my dinn er!'Lesson 12 Goodbye and good luck再見,一路順風Our ncighbour, Captain Charles Alison, will sail from Portsmouth tomorrow. Weshall meet him at the harbour early in the morning. Hewill be in his small boat, Topsail.Tapsail is a famous little boat. It has sailed across the Atla nt

23、icmany times. Captain Alison will set out at eight o'clock so we shall have pienty of time. Weshall see his boat and then we shall say good-bye to him. He will be away for two mon ths. We are very proud of him. He will take part in an importa nt race across the Atla ntic.Lesson 13 The Gree nwood

24、 Boys 綠林少年The Gree nwoodBoys are a group of popular sin gers. At prese nt, they are visit ing all parts of the coun try. They will be arriving here tomorrow. They will be coming by train and most of the young people in the tow n will be meet ing them at the stati on.Tomorrow evening they will be sin

25、ging at the Workers' Club. The GreenwoodBoys will be staying for five days. During this time, they will give five performances. As usual, the police will have a difficult time. They will be trying to keep order. It is always the same on these occasi ons.Lesson 14 Do you speak English?你會講英語嗎?I ha

26、d an amusing experience last year. After I had left asmall village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he had got into the car, Isaid good morning to him in French and he replied in the same Ian gu

27、age. Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all. Neither of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached the tow n, whe n the young man sudde nly said, very slowly, 'Do you speak En glish?' As I soon lear nt, he was En glish himself!Less on 15 Good n ews 佳音The secretary tol
