ThisstandardmakesreferencetothefollowingBritishStandardsandCodeof

Practice:

BS350,Conversionfactorsandtables.

BS565,Glossaryoftermsapplicabletotimber,plywoodandjoinery.

BS881&BS589,Nomenclatureofcommercialtimbersincludingsourcesof

supply.

CP201,Flooringofwoodandwoodproducts—Part1:Woodflooring(board,

strip,blockandmosaic).

Thisstandardmakesavailableforarchitectsandsurveyors,buildersandflooring

contractors,informationregardingminimumrequirementsforwoodblocksfor

floors.

Thechoiceofaspeciesforwoodblocksisinfluencedbyconsiderationofcost,

decorativeproperties,thenatureofthewearingsurfaceanditsabilitytostand

uptotheexpectedtrafficconditions,andthestabilityofthetimber.

Speciesoftimberareavailabletomeettherequirementsofeverytypeoftraffic

condition.Manyhardwoodswillwithstandtheheavydutyofindustrialfloorsand

whereconditionsarelessexactingawiderangeofwoodswillgiveexcellent

service.Alargenumberoftimbersisalsoavailableforthespecialfloorsin

buildingswhereparticularqualitiesinthespeciesarerequired.

Problemsconcerningthesuitabilityofvarioustimberstowithstanddifferent

typesandintensitiesoftrafficaredealtwithindetailinForestProducts

ResearchBulletinNo.40,“Timbersforflooring”.ThisBulletinincludesan

Appendix,reproducedattheendofthestandard,whichclassifieshardwoodsand

softwoodsinvariousgroupsaccordingtotheconditionsofserviceorapplication

asafloor.Thisclassificationoftimbersdoesnotmeanthattheyarenecessarily

availablecommerciallyorthatothertimbersnotspecificallymentionedare

unsuitable.Therearemanyhundredsofdifferentspeciesoftimbermanyofwhich

areverysuitableforflooringanditwouldbeimpracticaltolistthemall.

Itcannotbeemphasizedtoostronglythatnowoodflooringblockwillgive

satisfactoryserviceunlessitislaidinaccordancewithgoodpractice.ACodeof

Practice,CP201,“Flooringofwoodandwoodproducts”,Part1,“Woodflooring

(board,strip,blockandmosaic)”,makesrecommendationsonmethodsoflaying.

Severalnoveltypesofwoodflooringareavailable,someasthinas)in.(10mm),

butcompletestandardizationoftheseblocksisimpracticablebecauseofthe

varyingtechniquesofmanufacture,someofwhicharethesubjectofBritish

patents.Itisconsidereddesirable,however,thatthesetypesofflooringshould

conformtothisBritishStandardinsofarasitcanbeapplicabletothem.

NOTE

WheremetricequivalentshavebeengiventhefiguresinBritishunitsaretoberegardedas

thestandard.Themetricconversionsareapproximate.Moreaccurateconversionsshouldbebasedon

theTablesinBS350.

ABritishStandarddoesnotpurporttoincludeallthenecessaryprovisionsofa

ThisBritishStandardrelatesthehardwoodand

softwoodblocksexcludingendgrainblocksfor

layingonlevelconcreteorothertypesofrigidlevel

bases,andspecifiestheminimumrequirementsfor

dimensions,gradedescriptions,andmethodsof

manufacture.ItincludesanAppendixtakenfrom

theForestProductsResearchLaboratory

BulletinNo.40,“Timbersforflooring”,givingalist

ofsuitabletimbersformanufactureofwoodblocks

fordifferentapplications.

Hardwoodandsoftwoodblocksshallbefreefrom

anyofthedefectsduetomanufacturingdefinedin

BS565.

6Moisturecontent

Themoisturecontentofhardwoodandsoftwood

blocksshallbeadjustedtosuittheconditionsunder

whichthebuildingisultimatelytobeused.Itis

essentialthattheaverageconditionsoftemperature

andhumidityinthebuildingbefore,duringand

afterlaying,shallapproximatetothosewhich

prevailorwillprevailduringoccupation.Theranges

ofmoisturecontentaregiveninthefollowingtable:

providedtheydonotimpairthefittingofthe

Therequirementsforrateofgrowthconsiderations

applyonlytosoftwoodblocks.Thenumberofgrowth

rings,seenonthecross-sectionofthewoodblocks,

onaline1in.(25mm)inlengthperpendicularto

thedirectionoftherings,shallbenotlessthansix

normorethantwenty,unlessthematerialcontains

morethanone-thirdofsummerwood(thedark

portionofthegrowthring).

Ifa1in.linecannotbeobtainedonthecross-section

themeasurementsshallbemadeoveraslongaline

aspossible.

Timbersforflooring

ThehardwoodsandsoftwoodslistedinthisAppendixarerecommendedasbeingsuitableforuseas

flooring,mainlyinwoodstrip,woodblock,orboardform,butnotasend-grainblocks.Thelistisnot

exhaustiveandtheomissionofanyparticularspeciesoftimberdoesnotimplythatitisnecessarily

unsuitableforflooring.Ontheotherhandtheinclusionofatimberinthelistdoesnotimplythatitis

alwaysreadilyavailableonthemarket.Thosetimbersmentionedasespeciallysuitedtoparticular

conditionsofservicecanbeusedunderotherconditionswhentheypossessthenecessaryqualifications.

Somespecieshavethereforebeenincludedinoneormoregroups.Itshouldbeappreciated,however,that

thevarioustimbersindicatedassuitableforanyparticularserviceconditionsmaynotallbeequally

suitableineveryaspect.
