provinces,rangingfromGansuProvinceinthenorthwesttoShandongProvinceinthe

east.

Onepossibleexplanationisamajorclimateshift,calledtheHoloceneEvent3,which

happened4,000to4,500yearsago.Atthattime,theclimatebecamecolderanddrier

acrosscontinents,causingdamagetocropproduction.

Ontopofthis,thelateNeolithicperiodwasalsoatimeofrapidpopulationgrowth

aroundtheworld.Withanever-increasingpopulationandunsteadycropproduction,

itisreasonabletoassumethatNeolithicfarmersinnorthernChinawerestruggling.
