"MAP"isshortfor"MasteryofyourAnxietyandPanic".Weimmediatelyembarked

uponthiscourseoftreatmenl,whichisacognitive-behavioralprogramspecifically

designedforovercomingpanicdisorder.However,beforewecouldfinishtheprocess,

mytherapistmovedoutofstate,andwehadtoendourworktogether.Shereferredmeto

theCenterforAnxietyandRelatedDisordersatBostonUniversity.TheCenterisrunby

Dr.Barlowandisthepremierfacilityfortreatingpanicdisorder.HealingThefirstthingI

hadtodoattheCenterwastoundergoanin-depth,four-hourevaluation.Theintake

nurseaskedmeeveryconceivablequestionconcerningmyscarythoughts,depression,

socialsituations,behavior,etc.Aftertheintake,mycasewasdiscussedattheweekly

staffmeeting.Then,1wasassignedatherapistwhowouldworkwithmeonaweekly

basisthroughoutthethree-monthprogram.Thefirstpartoftheprogramcenteredon

education.Ilearnedallaboutthebiology,psychologyandhistoryofpanic.Ilearnedwhat

washappeningtomybodywhenIpanic,whyitwashappeningandwhatallthe

sensationsmeant.Ialsolearnedaboutthefactorsleadingtoapredisposition(易患病的

體質)forpanic.Educationwasaverycomprehensivepartoftheprogram,andithelped

metremendously.IfinallyknewwhatwashappeningtomeandthatIwasn'tcrazy!My

panicwassimplyamanifestation(表現)ofstress.Next,IlearnedhowIhadassociated

ownpanic.Then,weworkedon"cognitivereframing"—changingthewayIthought

stillgetanxioussometimes,butIdon'tturnitintopanic.TodayToday,Iviewmypanic

disorderasagift.Ithelpedmetobecomebrave.Inadditiontomycognitive-behavioral

skills,Ipracticedeeprelaxationbreathing.Throughmydailyrelaxationbreathing,Ihave

cometoexperienceadeepsenseofpeace,calmnessandstrength.MyMessagetoOthers
