紅色雙層巴士第一次駛入倫敦是1954年。當時它有個響亮的名字叫“馬路大師”，也有人簡稱“馬路主人”或“路主”。在一些與英國相關連的地方，如印度、香港、新加坡、南非等地，雙層巴士是主要通勤交通工具之一。由于倫敦街道狹窄擁擠，雙層巴士推出后，很好地解決了倫敦道路交通擁堵問題。統計顯示，在1956年～1968年間，共有2760輛雙層巴士投入使用。2004年，倫敦大約擁有五百輛現役紅色雙層巴士。
