out
the
extract,she
found
asubstance
thatawardedtoTuYouyou(co-winner).whoseresearchledtothediscovery
of
artemisinin,a
crucial
new
treatment
for
malaria.Artemisinin
has
saved
hundreds
of
thousands
of
lives,andhas
led
to
improved
health
for
millions
of
people.Over200millionpeople
around
theworld
get
malaria
each
year,andabout600,000die
from
it.Artemisinin
has
become
a
vital
partof
the
treatment
for
malaria,and
is
thought
to
save
100.000
lives
aYearin
Africa
alone.than
190timesthe
team
finallysucceeded
in

testing

medicine
