conditionsinthehospitalsthatcaredforthewounded.Peopledemandedthatsomethingbe

doneaboutit.AleaderofthegovernmentaskedFlorenceNightingaletotakesomenurses

intothewarhospitals.So,inNovember1854,Nightingalefinallygottoworkinahospital.

Shetookalong38nurseswhomshehadtrainedherself.

Atfirst,thedoctorsonthebattlefieldsdidnotwantNightingaleandhernursesintheir

hospitals.Theydidnotbelievethatwomencouldhelp.Butinfact,thenursesdidmakea

difference.Theyworkedaroundtheclock,tendingthesick.Thankstotheirhardwork,many

woundedsoldierssurvived.

Afterthewar,Nightingaleandhernursesweretreatedlikeheroes.Finally,in1860,she

startedtheNightingaleSchoolforNurses.Intime,thankstoFlorenceNightingale,nursing
