IncomesourcesofChinesestudentsarequitedifferentfromthose

ofAmericanstudents.InChina,studentsget90%oftheirmoneyfrom

theirparentswhileinAmerica,only50%ofstudentsmoneyis

providedbyparents.Inaddition,Chinesestudentsearnonly5%of

theirmoneyfromparttimejobsand5%fromfellowshiporscholarship

whileincomefromthesetworesourcesforAmericanstudentstakes

up35%and15%respectivelyoftheirtotalincome.

Ithinkthereareprobablythreereasonsfortheir

differences.First,becauseoftheinfluenceofdifferentsocialand

familyvalues,Chinesestudentshaveformedthehabitofaskingfor

moneyfromtheirparentswhileAmericanstudentshavedevelopedmore

senseofbeingfinanciallyindependent.Second,mostChineseparents

devotetoomuchcaretotheirchildrenandtheywouldrathersave

uptoaffordtheirchildrenseducationratherthanencouragethem

totakepart-timejobs.ButinAmerica,manyparentspaymore

attentiontodevelopingthestudents?abilityof

self-reliance,sotheyencouragetheirchildrentofindpart-time

jobtoearnsomemoneybythemselves.Third,sinceAmericaismore

developedthanChina,itisrelativelyeasyforstudentstofind

part-timejobs.InChina,suchopportunitiesareratherrare.

IbelievewiththedevelopmentofChina,moreandmoreChinese

studentswillrealizeandpaymoreattentiontothenecessityof

self-dependence.Inaddition,moreandmoreopportunitieswillbe

providedforthemtotakepart-timejobs.Somorestudentswillgo

outoftheivorytowertobroadentheirknowledgeandtobecomethe

masteroftheirownlives.

StudentUseofComputer

Since1990,therehasbeentremendousgrowthintheuseof

computersbystudents.Whilein1990,theaveragenumberofhoursa

studentspentonthecomputerwasaboutonehourperweek,thisnumber

grewtonearlyfourhoursperweekby1995,andtoapproximately20

hoursperweekbytheyear2000.

Thissignificantgrowthintheuseofcomputersbystudentsin

the1990scanbeattributedtoseveralfactors,includingwidespread

usage,lowerprices,andtechnologicalandsocial

developments.Nowadays,computersarewidelyusedbystudentsfor

wordprocessing,bookkeeping,multimediapresentations,andaccess

totheInternetforbothresearchand

communications.Additionally,since1990,duetocompetitionand

technologicaladvances,computerhardwareandsoftwareprices,as

wellasInternetusagechargeshavedropped

significantly.Finally,technologicaldevelopmentsandchangesin

socialhabitsinthe1990shaveplayedamajorroleinthis

tremendousgrowthintheuseofcomputers.Todayssocietyrelies

heavilyoncomputersforimmediateaccesstothenewsandfor

entertainment,including,listeningtomusic,watchingmoviesand

sportevents,andplayingcomputergames.

Whilecomputersareofgreatassistancetothestudents,and

therefore,areindispensabletools,theyalsoposesome

challenges.Thebiggestchallengethatmanystudentsfaceis

disciplineintheuseofthispowerfuldevice.Thatis,studentsneed

tohavethedisciplineofnotallowingthemselvestobeluredby

theentertainingaspectsofthiswonderfultool一aspectsthatcan

resultinaddictiontocomputergamesorviewingofundesirable

materialontheInternet.Thatistosay,studentsneedtousethis

powerfultoolwithgreatwisdom!

old.

theelderly.Altogether,theymadeup17%ofthetotal

population,whereastheprojectionfortheyear2021showsthatthey

willcontinuetogrowbutlessdramaticallyto20%ofthetotal

popu1ation(15%for65-85-year-oldsand
