Mandatoryactionstobetakentowardscybersecurity

1.ChangePasswordsandUseStrongPasswords:

Thenumberonereasonsystemsget“hacked”isduetohavingweakordefaultpasswords.Itisrecommendedtochangedefaultpasswordsimmediatelyandchooseastrongpasswordwheneverpossible.Astrongpasswordshouldbemadeupofatleast8charactersandacombinationofspecialcharacters,numbers,andupperandlowercaseletters.

2.UpdateFirmware

Asisstandardprocedureinthetech-industry,werecommendkeepingNVR,DVR,andIPcamerafirmwareup-to-datetoensurethesystemiscurrentwiththelatestsecuritypatchesandfixes.

1.ChangePasswordsRegularly

Regularlychangethecredentialstoyourdevicestohelpensurethatonlyauthorizedusersareabletoaccessthesystem.

2.ChangeDefaultHTTPandTCPPorts:

●ChangedefaultHTTPandTCPportsforsystems.Thesearethetwoportsusedtocommunicateandtoviewvideofeedsremotely.

●Theseportscanbechangedtoanysetofnumbersbetween1025-65535.Avoidingthedefaultportsreducestheriskofoutsidersbeingabletoguesswhichportsyouareusing.

3.EnableHTTPS/SSL:

SetupanSSLCertificatetoenableHTTPS.Thiswillencryptallcommunicationbetweenyourdevicesandrecorder.

4.EnableIPFilter:

EnablingyourIPfilterwillpreventeveryone,exceptthosewithspecifiedIPaddresses,fromaccessingthesystem.

5.ChangeONVIFPassword:

OnolderIPCamerafirmware,theONVIFpassworddoesnotchangewhenyouchangethesystem’scredentials.Youwillneedtoeitherupdatethecamera’sfirmwaretothelatestrevisionormanuallychangetheONVIFpassword.

6.ForwardOnlyPortsYouNeed:

●OnlyforwardtheHTTPandTCPportsthatyouneedtouse.Donotforwardahugerangeofnumberstothedevice.DonotDMZthedevice'sIPaddress.

●Youdonotneedtoforwardanyportsforindividualcamerasiftheyareallconnectedtoarecorderonsite;justtheNVRisneeded.

7.DisableAuto-LoginonSmartPSS:

ThoseusingSmartPSStoviewtheirsystemandonacomputerthatisusedbymultiplepeopleshoulddisableauto-login.Thisaddsalayerofsecuritytopreventuserswithouttheappropriatecredentialsfromaccessingthesystem.

8.UseaDifferentUsernameandPasswordforSmartPSS:

Intheeventthatyoursocialmedia,bank,email,etc.accountiscompromised,youwouldnotwantsomeonecollectingthosepasswordsandtryingthemoutonyourvideosurveillancesystem.Usingadifferentusernameandpasswordforyoursecuritysystemwillmakeitmoredifficultforsomeonetoguesstheirwayintoyoursystem.

9.LimitFeaturesofGuestAccounts:

Ifyoursystemissetupformultipleusers,ensurethateachuseronlyhasrightstofeaturesandfunctionstheyneedtousetoperformtheirjob.

10.UPnP:

●UPnPwillautomaticallytrytoforwardportsinyourrouterormodem.Normallythiswouldbeagoodthing.However,ifyoursystemautomaticallyforwardstheportsandyouleavethecredentialsdefaulted,youmayendupwithunwantedvisitors.

●IfyoumanuallyforwardedtheHTTPandTCPportsinyourrouter/modem,thisfeatureshouldbeturnedoffregardless.DisablingUPnPisrecommendedwhenthefunctionisnotusedinrealapplications.

11.SNMP:

DisableSNMPifyouarenotusingit.IfyouareusingSNMP,youshoulddosoonlytemporarily,fortracingandtestingpurposesonly.

12.Multicast:

Multicastisusedtosharevideostreamsbetweentworecorders.CurrentlytherearenoknownissuesinvolvingMulticast,butifyouarenotusingthisfeature,deactivationcanenhanceyournetworksecurity.

13.ChecktheLog:

Ifyoususpectthatsomeonehasgainedunauthorizedaccesstoyoursystem,youcancheckthesystemlog.ThesystemlogwillshowyouwhichIPaddresseswereusedtologintoyoursystemandwhatwasaccessed.

14.PhysicallyLockDowntheDevice:

Ideally,youwanttopreventanyunauthorizedphysicalaccesstoyoursystem.Thebestwaytoachievethisistoinstalltherecorderinalockbox,lockingserverrack,orinaroomthatisbehindalockandkey.

15.ConnectIPCamerastothePoEPortsontheBackofanNVR:

CamerasconnectedtothePoEportsonthebackofanNVRareisolatedfromtheoutsideworldandcannotbeaccesseddirectly.

16.IsolateNVRandIPCameraNetwork

ThenetworkyourNVRandIPcameraresidesonshouldnotbethesamenetworkasyourpubliccomputernetwork.Thiswillpreventanyvisitorsorunwantedguestsfromgettingaccesstothesamenetworkthesecuritysystemneedsinordertofunctionproperly.
