Afterrunninghundredsoftests,theresearchersnotedthatthe

monkeyswouldgoforthehighervaluesmorethanhalfthetime,indicating

thattheywereperformingacalculation,notjustmemorizingthevalue

ofeachcombination.

Whentheteamexaminedtheresultsoftheexperimentmoreclosely,

theynoticedthatthemonkeystendedtounderestimate(低估)asumcompared

withasinglesymbolwhenthetwowerecloseinvalue一sometimeschoosing,

forexample,a13overthesumof8and6.Theunderestimationwas

systematic:Whenaddingtwonumbers,themonkeysalwayspaidattention

tothelargerofthetwo,andthenaddedonlyafraction(小部分)ofthe

smallernumbertoit.
