speciallytrainedgroupofyoungwarriorscalledHwarangexplainhowtheseyoungmenwere
taughttaekkyon(anearlyformoftaekwondo)alongwithhistory,philosophy,ethics,archery,
riding,andswordfighting.MembersoftheHwarangwerealsoencouragedtotravelthroughout
Koreainordertolearnaboutthepeoplewholivedinallregionsofthecountry.Thishelped
spreadthepracticeoftaekkyonthroughoutKorea.Eventuallytaekkyon,whichwaspracticedfor
exerciseandsportwasreplacedbysubak,anothermartialart.Thepurposeofsubakwas
specificallyfighting,somembersofthemilitarywererequiredtolearnit.However,people's
interestinsubakdiedoutovertime.Bythe1800s,fewKoreansactuallypracticedsubak.After
Koreawasinvadedin1909,authoritiesputanendtothepracticeofallmartialartsinthe
country.Inthelongrun,thisbanactuallyledtoincreasedinterestinmartialarts,andsecret
groupsbegantopracticesubakagainintheBuddhisttempleshiddenhighinthemountainsin
Korea.AfterKoreagaineditsindependenceagainin1948,interestinmanyformsofmartialarts
grewaroundthecountry.TheKoreanTaeKwonDoAssociationwasformedin1961,andthiswas
followedbytheWorldTaeKwonDoFederationin1973.
Today,taekwondoenjoysgreatpopularityaroundtheworld.Morethan20millionpeople
practicetaekwondoinmorethan120countries.Taekwondowasalsomadeanofficial
demonstrationsportinthe1988OlympicGamesinSeoul,Korea.
