國際玉米小麥改良中心的小黑麥育種InternationalMaizeandWheatImprovementCenter(CIMMYT)hasbeenapioneerinpromotingfoodsecurityacrossthedevelopingworldthroughtheimprovementofmaizeandwheatcrops.However,smallruminantslikeblackwheathaveoftenbeenoverlookedinsuchefforts.ThispaperwilldiscussCIMMYT'sblackwheatbreedingprogram,highlightingitsimportanceandtheprogressachievedsofar.
Blackwheat,alsoknownasemmerwheat,isoneoftheoldestcerealsgrownbyhumans.Despiteitsimportanceasastaplefoodinmanydevelopingcountries,itslowyieldandsusceptibilitytodiseasesandpestshavehampereditsproduction.CIMMYTrecognizedthepotentialofblackwheattoimprovefoodsecurity,especiallyinregionswheregrowingconditionsarechallenging.Thus,itinitiatedabreedingprogramtodevelopnewvarietiesthatwouldberesistanttopestsanddiseaseswhilealsoproducinghigheryields.
