LosingGirlsasyoungas10yearsoldaredietingandindangerofdevelounhealthyattitudesaboutweight,bodyimageandfood,agroupofTorontoresearchersreportedTuesday.Theirstudyof2,279girlsaged10to14showedthatwhilethevastmajorityhadhealthyweights,nearlyathirdfelttheywereoverweightandweretryingtolosepounds.Evenatthetenderageof10,nearly32percentofgirlsfelt“toofat”and31percentsaidtheyweretryingtoMcVey,aresearcherattheHospitalforSickChildreninToronto,andherColleaguesyzeddatacollectedinanumberofsurveysofsouthernOntarioschoolgirlsbetween1993and2003,reportingtheirfindingsinTuesday'sissueoftheCanadianMedicalAssociationNearly80percentofthegirlshadahealthybodyweightandonly7.2percentwereconsideredoverweightusingstandardweight-to-heightratios.Mostresearcherssuggesttherateofoverweightchildreninthiscountryisseveraltimeshigherthanthatfigure.Nearly30percentofthegirlsreportedtheywerecurrentlytryingtoloseweight,thoughfewadmittedtodangerousbehaviorsuchasself-inducedvomiting.Still,atestthatmeasuredattitudestowardseatingshowed10.5percentofsurveyparticipantswerealreadyatriskofdeveloaneatingdisorder.“We'renottalkingaboutkidswho'vebeenprescribedadietbecausethey'reaboveaverageweightoroverweight.We'retalkingaboutchildrenwhoarewithinahealthyweightrange.Andtheyhavetakenituponthemselvestodiettoloseweight,”McVeysaid,acknowledgingshefoundtheratesdisturbing.Shesaidstrikingabalancebetweenhealthyweightsandhealthyattitudestowardsfoodandbodyimageisacomplextask,withnoeasysolutions.<1>、Thestudyshowedthatmostofthegirls
